History of the Newport School:
In 1930 Mrs. Clara Miller, a former D.C. school teacher, opened The Countryside School at 9401 Georgia Avenue in the Montgomery Hills section of Silver Spring, Maryland. In 1944, Countryside was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Parsons, moved to 9211 Georgia Avenue, and its name was changed to Parsons Countryside School. Morris Cohen purchased the school from the Parsons in 1948 and a year later, William Cohen (no relation to Morris) was hired as the Headmaster and Camp Director. That same year, 1949, the school was incorporated as Town and Country Day School and Summer Day Camp, Inc. and operated as Town and Country School. In time, the school added "Day" to its title and became known as Town and Country Day School.
When Morris Cohen retired in 1953, William Cohen assumed total leadership of the school, continuing as Headmaster. In 1958, Town and Country Day School moved into a newly-constructed, award-winning building at 11400 Viers Mill Road in Wheaton, serving children in Nursery (age 3) through grade 6. In 1962, the school became chartered as a non-profit, tax exempt institution.
In 1976, Town and Country Day School acquired a second campus and Grade 3 through 6 moved into new quarters at 5615 Beech Avenue in Bethesda. This move allowed the school to bring its expansion to grade 9. When William Cohen retired in 1980, Nina S. Olin and Andrew A. Zvara became co-Heads of the school. In 1982 the school moved to 11311 Newport Mill Road, enabling the school to accomplish two goals: one, to again have the entire school in one building, and two, to expand through Grade 12. Shortly after this move, the school's name was changed to The Newport School.
In June 1986, Newport celebrated the graduation of its first high school class - three dynamic women in whose honor our senior girls have carried three red roses during graduation ceremonies ever since. Following Colin G. Stevens, and Ronald W. Stephens, our current Head of School is Rachel Goldfarb.
The Newport School is dedicated to providing an educational environment that enables students to progress as rapidly as they are capable of advancing. Central to our mission is the belief that every student wants to do well and that small classes and personal attention are essential components of a superior private education.
At every level, the school provides a nurturing environment in which students are free to develop their own interests alongside a rigorous curriculum that meets the highest standards. We work with students both individually and in small groups to guide each child toward maximum intellectual, social, emotional, and athletic development.
We believe that students who bring different background experiences, perspectives, and talents to the learning process help create a dynamic environment in which all students benefit. As a result, Newport is dedicated to attracting and retaining students from diverse social end economic backgrounds who are willing to take responsibility for their own academic and personal growth.
When students complete their education at Newport, they take with them a love of learning and a genuine concern for others that allows them to mature into well-rounded adults. They also have a strong foundation of academic achievement and a level of self-confidence that allows them to compete successfully in whatever endeavors they choose.
